Walnut Creek Park
Walnut Creek Park
Walnut Creek Park, Walnut Creek Park Road, North Garden, VA, USA
What could be better than hanging out(side) with hordes of outdoorsy friends while listening to good music and eating good food? Why, spending some of that time learning the basics of white water kayaking of course!
THE PLAN: First, you need to be on the Creekathon main carpool adventure trip-list (not on the waitlist); sign up for that trip and wait to get the confirmation email that you have “joined the adventure”, not “joined the waitlist for the adventure”. Follow the instructions for that trip: Meet at Echols Dorm at 9:45am with the stuff you’ll need for kayaking (see below) and whatever else you want to bring to the Creekathon, then pile into vehicles and head to the park. I will meet you at our “base camp” (pavilion near upper parking lot). MEET ME AT MY TRUCK IN THE PARKING LOT – it’ll be obvious; probably the only one loaded up with lots of kayaks.
My co-leader, Mitch Lang, and I will spend ~2 hours teaching you the basics of white water kayaking. You’ll learn general info about white water kayaks, how to pilot one, how to wet exit and T-rescue, and you’ll get a change to learn how to Eskimo roll. No prior kayaking experience is necessary. After our session is over you can mingle with other Creekathoners, partake in another adventure if appropriate, explore the park, etc. There will probably be extra time after the session for you to paddle around some more but be sure to make it back to the pavilion by 2:30 (end time of the Creekathon and when cars will head back to C’ville).
Everyone gets waitlisted upon joining. After I have confirmed that you are on the trip list for the Creekathon I will add you to the trip list (after which you will get a confirmation email). If you have a car please volunteer your carpool services to make the Creekathon as big and awesome as it can be!
WHAT THE CLUB PROVIDES: Kayaks, gear, and kayak/gear transport.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING: Swimwear, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, snacks, water, items for other adventures that you might be on, ways to entertain yourself in the park after our adventure.
