OVERVIEW

This could go down as the earliest ever spring kayaking class. The nice thing is, though, the sooner you learn river safety and rolling skills, the more realistically you can hop into some real river running come actually spring.
The class will begin with an introduction to kayaking gear and basic open water safety principles. Once we get in the boats, everyone will get to paddle around a bit, and will have to try a wet exit. After this we will cover the T-rescue. If there is time and interest we can also take a shot at the eskimo roll.

CHANGE: There will be two sessions, like this:

Session A:
10:15 Leave from Echols dorm
10:45 Gear up and begin class
1:45 Gear down and begin to thaw
2:00 Session A people return to UVa

Session B:
1:15 Leave from Echols dorm
1:45 Gear up and begin class
4:45 Gear down and begin to thaw
5:00 Session B people return to UVa

Don’t be late to Echols, or the Kraken of walnut lake will exact its revenge and we’ll send this guy to find you: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33990

Club provides: organization & rides & instruction; gear; ice cream headache

You provide: any kayaking gear you have; swim trunks, NON-COTTON warm shirt, warm pants, warm socks, warm hat; more warm socks, warm woolen undies, warm towels

If weather is really nasty we may scratch the class, but don’t let a few clouds and sideways rain and blue mercury deter you. The club has a good bit of wetsuits, splash tops, and beanies, and you can do your part by wearing non-cotton layers and having lots of dry stuff to change into afterwards.

The first few folks to sign up are definately on, but after that I’ll have to sort it out based on peoples availability for one session or the other, and the what kind of cargo capacity we have. If you do end up being a driver, we can reimburse you for gas if you really really want, but it’s kind of a pain on so short a trip. If you do really really want remember to fill your tank before meeting at Echols.
