Kellog House: Bus Stop On The Hill
Observatory Hill
~Lunar Eclipse & Supermoon~
Name a more iconic duo. I’ll wait.
Here’s the deal:
The moon is at perigee on the night of January 20-21st, which means it’s going to appear huge in the sky. Awesome.
Not only that, but the moon will be in the Earth’s umbral shadow for 69** minutes that night so, for that time, it’s going to appear red.
So, here’s the rundown:
11:30 pm on SUNDAY the 20th: Meet at the Kellog Bus Shelter
11:40 pm: Make our way up OHill to just above the Water Treatment Plant
11:41 pm: Total Eclipse begins (i.e. the moon blushes bc we’re just too dang cute)
12:15 ish am on MONDAY: eclipse and Supermoon both reach their maximum
12:30 am: Make a mass exodus from OHill so we can try to get a decent amount of sleep before Monday classes
What to bring:
~ L A Y E R S – It is midnight in January. It will likely be very cold.
~ Also gloves
~ A blanket (or several) – highly recommend because everything is better with blankets
~ A flashlight if you want it (your phone probably works)
~ Hot Chocolate or another such warming beverage (optional)
~ Did I mention layers???
PSA: While SafeRide will not be operating at the start of this trip, it will be by the end and Kellog is a pickup/dropoff location, so definitely utilize that if you don’t have someone to go with.
**Actually, it’s 62 minutes but who’s counting.
