Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
George Washington National Forest
So, spring came and now it is a time for longer spring hikes :).
Little Sluice is a place on a VA/WV border. The main route is 13 ml
loop with 2,100 ft elevation change in three different ascents.
In the hike classification it is rated by 5 (maximum difficulty). I don’t know
how they measure difficulty (I can’t figure out it from the description as
well), just simple extrapolation gives us that 5>3 and >>1 😉
Besides it has 5 in the solitude grade.
But the crucial point is that the gate entrance to the GWNF will be closed
(till April 1). It means that we’ll have additional 6.0 miles to the hike, 3.0
miles out/back to mapped parking area. So, the hike will be 19ml in total.
That seems a little bit strenuous. For this reason prior hiking or running
experience is very desirable. My main concern is not that any person can’t do
it (probably can being reasonably healthy) but it is intended to be completed
in a white time (before 6-6.30pm), in other words we have to move with a speed
2.5-3 ml/h.
The most important
Going for a hike you should not take it as a survival test. If you become to
survive in the middle, it means you’ve done something wrong. Going for a hike
you should enjoy it ;).
