Mary’S Rock South and Hawksbill Mountain- Saturday, November 9th, 2013

OVERVIEW

All-
Let’s head North on Skyline Drive to check out Mary’s Rock South and Hawskbill Mountain.

Mary’s Rock South hike is a moderate hike that is 2.6 miles out and back. It starts in Meadow Spring Trail and ascends immediately, then levels only to climb again. After about .4 mile, you’ll see a huge stone chimney which is all that remains of the PATC hiker cabin. From the cabin the trail ascends. At .6 mile there will be a cement post. Turn right here and pick up the AT. The trail ascends then descends several hundred feet, at which point you come to another post marking another .6 mile. Here we turn left onto the spur trail that ascends to Mary’s Rock summit reaching the top at 1.3 miles.

Hawksbill Mountain is 2.8 miles loop and considered Easy/Moderate. It begins at Mile 45.6 off the Skyline Drive. Hawksbill is the park’s highest peak. It is also a good place to see birds and pretty views.
This hike is open to those experienced or inexperienced or even those who recently joined the club.

Carpooling: If you are interested in carpooling or being a driver for carpooling, please let me know. We will leave at 8:30 AM at Echols Dorm.

I am currently opening this trip to 4 people until another driver joins the wait list at which point we can expand to 8 people. Please bring extra money to contribute to the daily parking pass which is $10 per car. So if you bring $2-3 , you should be good.

What to Bring: Please be sure to bring lots of water, comfortable sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a camera and a lunch/snack for when we reach the summits! Since we are now into the Fall season, I would also recommend dressing in layers or bringing a fleece or light jacket.

Please keep in mind that you are responsible for you own safety and the activities you choose to participate in while on the hike.
In the event of in climate weather, this hike may be canceled and/or rescheduled.
