OVERVIEW

Morven Gardens is a one acre, live experiment in sustainable market farming at UVA. Run primarily by students, this land provides a chance to learn about and experiment with agriculture for those who would not otherwise have a chance.

Now, Morven is in need of volunteers to help clean up post-harvest. They’re looking for a group of interested Outdoors Club members to do a variety of tasks to prepare the garden for a cold winter. Emily Salle, the president of Morven Kitchen Gardens (a CIO that takes the produce of the farm and sells it to various green-organizations on grounds), has sent the below in description of the work that needs being done:

“It’s maintenance time! The summer crops just got trounced by a couple of lovely frosts, which means there’s a lot of cleanup and transitioning to be done. Come work at the 1-acre Morven Kitchen Garden from 1pm to 4pm while surrounded by the expansive rolling hills of UVA’s Morven Estate. We will be removing summer plants, cleaning out rows and beds, weeding, mowing, and taking care of the winter crops. Come see our winter growing techniques and learn about student-grown food production at UVA.”

So if you’ve ever been interested in seeing what goes into the management of a small sustainable farm, or simply have a desire to get out on one of the last nice evenings of the year and do some service for a good cause, come on out!

Meeting up TOMORROW in front of the bookstore!

Bring water, appropriate shoes, and some light warm clothes for later on in the day.

See you there!
