OVERVIEW

This ride is one of my favorites in VA and is considered one of the best climbs in the state, and because it’s a loop it also has an excellent down hill section. This 21 mile loop starts on FS road 42 at 1,595′ elevation, and takes you up to the top of Bald Mountain (3,587′), then continues down the Blue Ridge Parkway for a few miles to Slacks Mountain. From here the trail drops 1,677′ to Sherando Lake. The ride up is pretty gruelling so you should only sign up if you’re an experienced biker who loves to ride, or if you’re a sucker for punishment! We’ll be riding in the hottest time of day (sorry, scheduling problems 🙂 so bring plenty of water and sugary snacks. Remember: the club has 5 nice bikes that don’t get enough use. Grab some lunch before heading out, bring a towel for the swim in the lake when we’re finished, and bring some money for dinner if you want.

Outdoors at UVa provides:

bikes, helmets, water bottle, seat in car

You must bring:

water, water, water, snacks, money for dinner (the club can chip in a little here), towel (we’ll swim in Sherando lake at the end)
