OVERVIEW

Coming to the New River Gorge Extravaganza and want a taste of the awesome rock of the New? This is your trip. We’ll keep the grades low – 5.10 at the most, 5.8 guaranteed – maybe as low as 5.5/5.6. The plan is to set top ropes on all the routes we do but if you want to lead something (and know how and can wrangle a belayer) that’s cool too.

This trip is open to those who have never climbed before but I need a good ratio of those who can belay to those who have never belayed. Therefore, I’m putting everyone on the waitlist so I can sort this out. I also need drivers since I can only carry 5 people in my car so drivers have extra advantage to getting off the waitlist.

Destination is undecided but will be somewhere at the New/Meadow/Summersville. It will depend on the skill level of the group that signs up, where people want to go, whether faces or cracks are preferred, the weather, the lake level, where other climbing trips are going, etc. Possibilities abound: Orange Oswald, Perot Wall, Long Wall, Whipporwill, Star Trek Wall, Moon Wall, Sandstonia, Beer Wall, Bridge, Junkyard, or anywhere else you can think of.

FOOD:
**New policy this year: The club does not pay for food on trips* so you’ll need to provide your own. Plan ahead!

I will probably brew up a big pot of coffee Saturday and Sunday mornings, hopefully enough for everyone.

*For dinners, the club has decided to make an exception to policy and cover Saturday’s dinner. It’ll be tasty. Sriracha Shrimp tasty!

Friday and Sunday dinners are still on you. You can bring your own food for dinners or there are good restaurants in Summersville and Fayetteville. I’ll have a stove, skillet, pot, etc. that are great for cooking and will be available to use.

ATTENTION! This trip is only for Saturday. If you want to sample more of the awesomeness of the New you need to sign up for other NRGE trips on Sunday and/or Friday (if you’re coming Friday).

WHAT TO BRING/GET FROM THE CLUB BEFOREHAND:
Water (at least 2 liters)

***If you need climbing gear please get it from the club at a gear room beforehand! Otherwise it will be very hard to get you on the rock***

About the NRGE:

WHAT IS THE NEW RIVER GORGE EXTRAVAGANZA?

The New River Gorge Extravaganza (NRGE) is a choose-your-own-adventure megatrip that the club puts on in the fall to one of the best outdoor recreation destinations in the nation, perhaps world, and is only 3 hours from C’ville. The New River itself is 1 of 10 National Wild and Scenic Rivers in the US, and the gorge and surrounding area (including the Gauley River/Summersville area) hosts excellent white water kayaking for all levels, rafting, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, hiking/backpacking, and caving. Due to the outdoor rec opportunities and natural beauty, this area of West Virginia is also very popular for tourism. The club makes various trips to the NRG area each year but the goal of the extravaganza is to bring all of the club’s popular genres/activities and people together for 1 amazing weekend.

WHEN?

The weekend of 10/3-10/5. The departures will most likely be from Echols at various times on Friday, the 3rd. In their trip descriptions the trip leaders should indicate what day/time their adventure(s) will depart from the campsite. If you end up only doing one activity during the weekend, you’ll have a day to explore or hang out at the campsite. So you should sign up for adventures every day.
