OVERVIEW

Get excited, the New River Gorge Extravaganza is here!!

We’re going to be setting off on a ~5mi hike in the New River Gorge, covering some of the most beautiful trails of the wild and wonderful West Virginia.

The plan is to meet at the Echols Brick Wall at 7:00 am Saturday to join the rest of the NRGE crew out at Ray’s Campground in WV.

When we arrive we’ll unpack tents and food and then head to the Long Point trail head! Hopefully we’ll hit the trail by 11:00 am as it’s about a three hour drive out to the camp.

We’ll be hiking parts of the Fayetteville, Timber Creek and Long Point trails.
You can find more information about our hike here:
http://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/fayetteville_trails.htm

The club food policy has changed so make sure to bring whatever food you’ll need for all of Saturday and Sunday. Exciting news though, the club is providing dinner on Saturday night!

I plan to drive back Sunday evening around 6pm.

Right now there’s room for 7 people on the trip because that’s as many as my car will hold. If you’re arriving Friday and are interested in coming on this hike, let me know! If an additional driver signs up to then I’ll add more people off the waitlist.

WHAT TO BRING:

Hiking boots or sturdy shoes
Water (2 Liters)
Warm clothes
Light snacks for the trail (granola bar, trail mix etc.)
Camping gear (sleeping bag, mat, etc.)
Food and food $
Sunscreen

If you have a sleeping bag or mat, bring it along. I will be bringing any needed tents and sleeping bags for our adventure.

About the NRGE:

WHAT IS THE NEW RIVER GORGE EXTRAVAGANZA?

The New River Gorge Extravaganza (NRGE) is a choose-your-own-adventure megatrip that the club puts on in the fall to one of the best outdoor recreation destinations in the nation, perhaps world, and is only 3 hours from C’ville. The New River itself is 1 of 10 National Wild and Scenic Rivers in the US, and the gorge and surrounding area (including the Gauley River/Summersville area) hosts excellent white water kayaking for all levels, rafting, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, hiking/backpacking, and caving. Due to the outdoor rec opportunities and natural beauty, this area of West Virginia is also very popular for tourism. The club makes various trips to the NRG area each year but the goal of the extravaganza is to bring all of the club’s popular genres/activities and people together for 1 amazing weekend.

WHEN?

The weekend of 10/3-10/5. The departures will most likely be from Echols at various times on Friday, the 3rd but this one will be early Saturday morning. In their trip descriptions the trip leaders should indicate what day/time their adventure(s) will depart from the campsite. You might end up only doing one activity during the weekend, which will give you a day to explore or hang out at the campsite.
