Nrge Sunday Beginner Rock Climbing

OVERVIEW

Come climbing at the New River Gorge on the final day of the extravaganza!

This is primarily a beginner’s trip intended for all those who have never gotten much of a chance to go climbing before. So if you’ve only climbed a couple of times, or even not at all, this is the trip for you!

The trip will likely include an introduction to belaying course at the beginning of the day for those who haven’t before had any exposure to it. Then, around midday we will start getting on climbs, and climb until the afternoon before heading back on home.

We will be going to the Bridge Buttress, which is actually one of the first places I ever went climbing, and also one of the first places I ever learned to belay, climb, and tie knots. It’s an excellent place to go as newcomers, and the climbing community around the location is filled with people trying out climbing for the first time.

And finally, if you are not strictly a beginner and are still looking for something to do on the Sunday of the Gorge, please feel free to join! Climbers of all levels welcome, and it will be nice to have extra belayers helping out!

What to bring:
=SHOES.
(Climbing shoes are very important for climbing, if you do not have these, please go to a Gear Room during the week to pick them up before the trip, we will have a hard time getting them for you)
=Water
(make sure you bring water to the nrge, probably about two liters in water bottles, refillable at Ray’s)
=Food
(Plan your food carefully, Saturday pizza provided by the club, but much of the rest will need to be on your part, if so desired, I can bring oatmeal for the Sat breakfast)
=Harness
(Also able to get this from the gear room, very important to have)

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have a ride to the extravaganza. Sunday trips organize rides back, not rides to the gorge!

About the NRGE:

WHAT IS THE NEW RIVER GORGE EXTRAVAGANZA?

The New River Gorge Extravaganza (NRGE) is a choose-your-own-adventure megatrip that the club puts on in the fall to one of the best outdoor recreation destinations in the nation, perhaps world, and is only 3 hours from C’ville. The New River itself is 1 of 10 National Wild and Scenic Rivers in the US, and the gorge and surrounding area (including the Gauley River/Summersville area) hosts excellent white water kayaking for all levels, rafting, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, hiking/backpacking, and caving. Due to the outdoor rec opportunities and natural beauty, this area of West Virginia is also very popular for tourism. The club makes various trips to the NRG area each year but the goal of the extravaganza is to bring all of the club’s popular genres/activities and people together for 1 amazing weekend.

WHEN?

The weekend of 10/3-10/5. The departures will most likely be from Echols at various times on Friday, the 3rd. In their trip descriptions the trip leaders should indicate what day/time their adventure(s) will depart from the campsite. If you end up only doing one activity during the weekend, you’ll have a day to explore or hang out at the campsite. So you should sign up for adventures every day.
