Nrge Sunday Hiking Trip to Grandview Rim Trail

OVERVIEW

What’s crackin’ fellow lovers of Mother Nature?

You’re getting this email because I would like to cordially invite you to join me on a promenade of the profoundly gorgeous New River Gorge. This is a part of the annual New River Gorge Extravaganza trip.

The plan is to get up at a reasonable time on Sunday (8:00 or 9:00), pack up, make or buy some breakfast (whatever y’all would rather do since food is no longer provided by the club), and hit the road so that we can hit the trail. It’ll be about a 45 minute drive to the trail head. I want to be puttin’ boot to dirt by 11:00. We will head straight back to Cville from the trail head (it’s on the way back). Don’t imagine us hiking longer than 1.5-2 hours.

We’ll be hiking on the Grandview Rim Trail in the New River Gorge National River area managed by the NPS. The trail is a moderate 3.2 miles chock full of delicious canyon overlooks — I’m stoked. The link for more info is below.

Since this is a Sunday trip, you’re probably only coming if you are on another trip for Friday or Saturday. Because of that, I won’t be coordinating rides up to WV, just rides to the trail head and back to good ol’ Cville after the hike. If this is your only trip of the NRGE then we can probably work out a ride for you… but plan on doing a lot of hanging around for the two days before the hike. I am doing the Friday mountain biking so I will be leaving Friday at 2:00.

I don’t have a car, so everyone will be waitlisted until some kind soul with a car signs up. Then I’ll let as many folks off as I can…. you know the drill.

Food will be played by ear. If y’all want to collaborate to cook breakfast at Ray’s then I can arrange that, but if you want to get breakfast on the way I would also be amenable to that. Lunch will be had after we get off the trail on the way back to Cville. The $10 is just a food cost estimate.

WHAT TO BRING (for the hike):

Hiking boots or sturdy shoes
Water (2 Liters)
Warm clothes
Light snacks for the trail (granola bar, trail mix etc.)

About the NRGE:

WHAT IS THE NEW RIVER GORGE EXTRAVAGANZA?

The New River Gorge Extravaganza (NRGE) is a choose-your-own-adventure megatrip that the club puts on in the fall to one of the best outdoor recreation destinations in the nation, perhaps world, and is only 3 hours from C’ville. The New River itself is 1 of 10 National Wild and Scenic Rivers in the US, and the gorge and surrounding area (including the Gauley River/Summersville area) hosts excellent white water kayaking for all levels, rafting, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, hiking/backpacking, and caving. Due to the outdoor rec opportunities and natural beauty, this area of West Virginia is also very popular for tourism. The club makes various trips to the NRG area each year but the goal of the extravaganza is to bring all of the club’s popular genres/activities and people together for 1 amazing weekend.

WHEN?

The weekend of 10/3-10/5. The departures will most likely be from Echols at various times on Friday, the 3rd. In their trip descriptions the trip leaders should indicate what day/time their adventure(s) will depart from the campsite. You might end up only doing one activity during the weekend, which will give you a day to explore or hang out at the campsite.
