Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Old Rag
Thats right- a hike at midnight! We will depart from Echols dorm at 12AM (midnight) and arrive at good ol’ Old Rag Mt. with the plan to summit in time to watch the sunrise.
Old Rag is a 7 mile hike with a 2200 ft elevation change. It first starts out with a few switchbacks and then gets a bit more interesting with a boulder scramble, a cave, and a natural stairwell. This is a moderate hike, but still strenuous in some sections.
Its a full moon that night, so we should have a good amount of light, but headlamps (provided by the club) will also help. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, because I need to know how many headlamps I need before gear room time. Feel free to bring your own sources of light too.
IMPORTANT: it will get cold up at the top. It is an exposed area that is subject to massive amounts of wind chill, so bring a heavy jacket. The key is LAYERS.
We provide:
headlamps
money for gas +30% if you drive
You provide:
Water (1-2L)
Snacks if you want
LAYERS (fleese + jacket)
I cannot stress the importance of layers for the top of the mountain. Bring a sleeping bag if you can (or borrow one from the club by dropping by out gear room times). Whatever temperature it feels like that night in cville, it will feel like that temp -30 degrees at the top.
Get stoked for an amazing sunrise!
