Outdoor Extravaganza at the New River Gorge

OVERVIEW

This is a weekend camping adventure to the New River Gorge (NRG) area. We’ll stay at Ray’s Campground in Hico, WV Friday, Saturday, and perhaps Sunday nights over Labor Day weekend. I have solicited the help of other trip leaders in the club to make this a choose-your-own-adventure style trip. So far I have a few hiking leaders on board, as well as a couple of kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, and climbing leaders. If you are interested in doing any of these adventures in the NRG area or just want to camp and do your own thing, please sign up for my trip AND the respective adventures as they are posted. After you sign up for this adventure you will answer a series of questions that will help me gauge the group’s interest, which I will then relay to the trip leaders so that we can work to accommodate everyone. I’m hoping this will be a fun multi-sport trip for all. Imagine rafting down the class 4 rapids of the New River Gorge on Saturday then taking a leisure hike through the woods with views of the gorge on Sunday! Or hiking then rafting, or kayaking then biking, or biking then climbing, etc.

A lot of planning is going into this so some of the details may change as the date draws near, but so far I know that I will be leaving mid-afternoon on Friday, 9/2 to get to the campground early and get tents, etc. set up. I’m hoping to have several drivers who will leave town at various times, so don’t worry if the adventure start time does not work for you. Saturday I will lead (or I will find another leader) a beginner kayaking trip down the New River (prior experience necessary; see the trip details when I post it for more info), then Sunday I will kayak the gorge and head on home after. There might be an option for folks to stay another night if drivers allow. I will soon post the mentioned adventures that I will be leading, as will some of the other leaders. Please be patient if you are waiting for a particular type of adventure to get posted as some of my leaders are still working on their schedules and adventure details. Some adventures may require additional fees; see below. Please sign up if there is a waitlist as I may be able to expand the trip size.

The Club provides: Camping gear (limited availability) including tents, sleeping bags and pads, climbing gear, kayaks and kayaking gear, mountain bikes and helmets, gas money, food (I’ll get a bunch of groceries), and lodging fees.

You should bring: Your camping gear, whatever toys you want to play with, clothes (prep for cool nights and mornings) including appropriate attire for your adventure(s) of choice, flashlight, towel, toiletries, sunscreen, money (for restaurant dining, snacks/drink etc, particular adventure fees, etc)
