OVERVIEW

During this lovely month of Earth appreciation UVA’s Office of Sustainability has hosted a ton of events embracing environmental stewardship & fun– one of which is the kayak cleanup! This event gives back to Ragged, a place that has provided ODC with SO many magical adventures. People who have registered for the kayak cleanup will pick up trash, learn a bit about hydrology and Raggeds role as a reservoir, and hop on some SUPs & kayaks to paddle about and enjoy the beautiful reservoir.

Outdoors Club is partnering with OFS for the kayak cleanup, and ODC is helping out by providing a few volunteers to help facilitate the event. If you sign up for this trip, you’ll be volunteering for the event by working a 2.5 hour shift and helping welcome volunteers, facilitate trash pickup, help people get into boats, and boat around!

There are two volunteer shifts: 11 am – 1:30 pm and 1:30 – 4 pm

You can register to get a boat during your volunteer shift using this link, but if there are no boats available we can also bring a club SUP, so no matter what you will get to be on the water 🙂 If you don’t want a boat or a sup provided by the Office of Sustainability then there is no need to register with the link. https://www.go.recsports.virginia.edu/Program/GetProgramDetails?courseId=02fc3ae3-e284-43ca-9c94-672e05087947&semesterId=3f01b4ba-1afa-4d16-9f0f-1b1ac8fe759d

Groups will meet at corner of echols dorm 20 minutes before the start of each volunteering shift and then head over to Ragged. I’ll be there to help out with both volunteering groups!

This trip is slightly complicated with its two different leave times as well as the boat registration link, so please reach out to me if you have any questions!! Also, this trip is different than signing up for the kayak cleanup. Here we will basically be volunteering to organize the volunteers. So if you’re interested in just being at the cleanup but not facilitating it, feel free to ignore this trip but use the link to register for a boat!

To bring:
Water (2 L)
Snack / lunch
Bathing suit, water shoes, layers
Sunscreen

Schedule:
10:40 am or 1:10 pm– Meet at corner of echols dorm 20 mins before volunteering shift and head over to Ragged to receive instructions on how we’ll be helping with the cleanup!
For the next 2.5 hours: help with cleanup, socialize, paddle around
1:40 or 4:10 pm– back at corner of echols dorm.

** note: the second volunteering shift will probably be shorter than the first shift, there are less people registered for that half of the event.
