Corner Of Echols Dorm
James River - Richmond
The James is a little on the low side right now, but there is a chance for rain later this week, so Im crossing my fingers and planning a trip. This section of the James is very unique in that it goes through the middle of a city. Not to mention it has some fun play spots and a great local bar (if you can find it). The rapids are mostly class 3 with one class 4 (though at low levels it shouldnt be bad at all…). You can check out better descriptions at http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1952/. To join the trip, you must be able to roll. If you dont know what a roll is, you probably shouldnt sign up even if you are a good swimmer. Not to discourage anyone – this is a great transition river for people. There is nothing too hard or dangerous on this river, but it offers great practice for bigger rivers. We’re always looking for new boaters to paddle with, so if you are unsure of your abilities, please sign up but talk to me beforehand.
We will drop by Legends, the Legendary Richmond Bar afterwards for those that are 21. I am going to try and make it back for the soccer game at 7:30 vs Boston College (feel free to join me to that as well…).
Outdoors at UVA provides: All the gear, including kayaks, paddles, helmets, PFDs, wetsuits and splash jackets, except footwear. Gas money to drive there. ~1/2 of food cost.
You should bring: swimwear, footwear that can get wet (aqua socks, sandles, old sneakers), water (there is a water-bottle-holder-place in the boats), snacks, $$ for dinner, ID if you’re 21 or over, towel, sunscreen, warm, dry clothes to change into after paddling
See you out there!
