Hello Gauleyfest attendees. Skylar and I are looking to break free from the lab of prototyped short-haired women in flip flops that we were created in by taking a trip to the New River for some whitewater SUP (stand up paddleboard) surfing before we enter the gates of GAULEYFEST on friday evening. You might be wondering how the dang heck this is possible because if you had told me like three years ago to get on a paddleboard on whitewater I would have accused you of witchery and burned you at the stake, but its actually super fun and chill and far more possible than you may imagine.
The plan is to be leaving cville around 11am on friday so we can get to the river around 2 or 3, pump up the boards, and get on the rapid! We are only gonna bring 2-3 paddleboards because basically we will just be taking turns running laps on the rapid. We will paddle and hang out on hammocks and chill by the river until it is time to depart to enter the grounds of Gauleyfest. We are gonna hit the rapid at fayette station in which both of us have paddled before. It’s a great rapid to learn on because it’s pretty safe to fall in and coming out of the rapid is super chill. There’s also a wave you can try to ride. We’re both not very good at this and will definitely fall and it’s super fun.
We bring:
paddleboards
paddles
PFDs
Helmets
You bring:
anything you need for the entire weekend (see main gauley trip)
snacks/food/water
clothes/swimsuit that can get wet
hammock or something to sit on when you aren’t paddling!
