Corner of Echols
Corner of Echols
Courthouse Rd, King William, King William County, VA, USA
No experience necessary! On the second and fourth Thursday of every month, the Fairfield Foundation of Gloucester, Virginia, hosts archaeology open to the public at King William Courthouse (ca. 1725), the oldest continuously used courthouse in the U.S. (300 straight years!).
Our goal is to find the location of the lost buildings (currently Quarels Tavern and Hills Hotel) that surrounded the courthouse, by uncovering the foundations and the artifacts left behind!
You will be taught by me and/or fellow archaeologists how to dig, screen, trowel, and identify layers and features in the soil. Again, no experience necessary, just like most things it’s easy to learn if you have a good teacher (we’re good teachers). This is an awesome opportunity to try archaeology, and find some cool artifacts (two $5 gold pieces have been found here!)
