OVERVIEW

Hello to all you lovely ODC members! Are you passionate about service, sustainability, or DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusivity) within the outdoors? Do you want to get more involved with the club? Well, we have news for you!

Much like a natural ecosystem, we believe that many parts of ODC are interwoven. We are merging our DEI / service-sustainability committee interest meetings to dive into these wondrously festering inter-spaces of collaboration. Service expands further beyond trail building, DEI beyond equitable representation, and Sustainability beyond CO2 monitoring. Instead, we envision a collective approach to initiatives like environmental activism, community organizing, club CO2 auditing, policy revisioning, trail work, guerilla gardening, food justice, housing equity, wheat pasting, ODC constitutional restructuring, and so much more. And we want to hear from YOU and your ideas and concoct them into reality!!!

Come meet us on Monday September 4th at 5:30 pm on the South Lawn to hear more about how to get involved!
About the committees:

The DEI committee focuses on how we can make club operations, trips, and the outdoors more accessible and welcoming to all individuals. We’ve done collabs with other organizations on grounds such as QSU, undocUVA, and Empathable to reach different student bodies and learn from different perspectives. We’re always looking for delightful new collab ideas and creative ways to spark enthusiasm and accessibility to the outdoors! This is a great place to get closer to other club members AND have a positive impact in the club!!

The service-sustainability committee is a wonderful medley of folks who work to make sure enjoying nature and caring for it come hand in hand! Last year we had weekly hour-long meetings where we shared ideas, updated each other on projects, and enjoyed each other’s company. Some of our crispy crunchy projects from last year include making acorn homemade flour (an arduous but rewarding process), collaborating with the local intentional community Cambia for overnight trips and workshops, a tour of Black Bear Composting, a super fun ODC clothing swap, gardening and wildflower planting with Visible Records, Morven Gardens, and other local organizations, and MORE!!!!!! Everyone is welcome and new ideas are always greeted with enthusiasm!

Please come if you have even an inkling of interest – this is very low commitment and anyone is welcome!! And if you can’t make it, no worries! Fill out this short interest form (just to get an understanding of what you’re interested in and your experience) & we’ll touch base individually with everyone within the next few weeks to make sure you’re involved in all the best ways <3
