Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Roan Mtn
Hey everyone,
I’m doing another fall break backpacking trip on short notice, this time to roan mountain in TN. Its going to be a 15-20 mile section of the AT, spending most of the time on bald mountain peaks with 360 views. Should be pretty good, you can google some images to get an idea. Unlike last year’s trip to the smokies, there will only be 2-3 thousand feet of climbing vs 15, so anyone new to backpacking is welcome to join (you still have to be able to carry 30lbs for 10 miles in a day though). Plan is to leave Sunday morning. Drive is about 5 hours south, we’ll park at 19E off the highway and hop on the AT southbound for at least 15 miles, maybe more depending on how we feel. When we turn around its back to the cars. Camping is wherever we want, but water may be scarce on the peaks. Depending on how fast we go we may return on either monday night or tuesday.
TLDR;
Roan Mountain Backpacking
Leaving Sunday morning
backpack ~ 15 miles to and back
spend 1-2 nights
Stuff to bring:
Backpack with capacity to carry your stuff (50+liters)
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
Trail Shoes (I would stay away from open toed-might be cold)
food for 3 days >6000 calories
flashlight or headlamp
4 liters water
Toiletries
bugspray
Its going to be on the top of a mountain, so expect high wind, freezing temps, rain, and lots of sun. Bring lots of layers.
I’m Bringing:
medkit
water filtration
fuel/stoves
Weather looks good so far, so it should be a fun time!
