Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Dolly Sods
We will be leaving for Roaring Plains aka Dolly Sods South at 8:45AM sharp Saturday morning. We will drive approximately 3 hrs to the trail head. Upon arrival we will eat bagged lunch (you bring your own).
We will hike an easy couple miles and set up base camp, hopefully in a beautiful setting by a stream. After setting up camp we can decide what to do. This could include some gathering, reading, exploring, survival skills, or whatever. One person brought slackling equipment last year!
Sunday morning we will pick up camp and stash our packs then go hike the canyon rim trail. It will not be a ton of elevation gain but the hiking may be technical on poorly marked trails. We will have a GPS and maps/compass to help out but be sure to bring a sense of adventure. The day loop will pass through some beautiful vistas of Dolly Sods and a crazy canyon. Here are some photos to wet your appetite: http://maryland.sierraclub.org/hc/pictures/2007/09/20070915-RoaringPlains.asp . Here is an approximate description of the hike: http://midatlantichikes.com/rp2.htm
After our hike we will pick up our packs and head back to the cars. On the way home we will stop for dinner, possibly at Seneca Pizza.
This trip is currently limited to 4 but will be increased if more drivers sign up. DRIVERS GET PRIORITY!
