Shenandoah National Park Fly Fishing Trip (REVISED LENGTH NOW MUCH SHORTER)

OVERVIEW

Ever wanted to catch one of Virginia’s native brook trout? Shenandoah National Park’s Sugar Hollow should have plenty of these guys in stock and maybe a few rainbow trout as well this Saturday.

We will be fly fishing on the North Fork of the Moormans River which will require a bit of hiking (between 4 and 6 miles depending on how good the fishing is). The hike isn’t very difficult but has some vertical and a few river crossings. We should be able to cross the river and stay dry, but conditions can change so wear clothing you don’t mind getting wet. Hiking up the mountain may also warrant warmer clothing. This is an intermediate trip, which means you are going to be expected to have some experience casting with a fly rod. Fall trout conditions are improving and the fishing should be pretty solid so the trip should be a great time.

Schedule:
10 AM – Meet at the corner of Echols
10:40 AM – Arrive at the Sugar Hollow parking lot
2:20 PM – Leave Sugar Hollow parking lot (I doubt the trip will last this long but the fishing could be amazing and we may want to stay the full time)
3:00 PM – Arrive at the corner of Echols

Gear to bring:
Hiking shoes that you don’t mind getting wet
Backpack or some sort of bag you don’t mind lugging around all day
Water
Snack/Lunch
Virginia freshwater fishing license (you just need a freshwater license for Saturday specifically don’t spend lots of money on a license you don’t need)

Important notes:
***Drivers will be given priority and gas can be reimbursed***
Fishing licenses can be purchased online and online versions are accepted by game wardens. Make sure to screenshot your license before coming because cell service does not exist on the mountain.
