OVERVIEW

Hey there, dirtbags!

There’s a Dragon in Catawba and it’s time for its bi-yearly dental cleaning. Join me and my fearless co-leader and professional backpacker Burke Haywood in checking out this Dragon’s Tooth for a short overnight backpacking trip. This short, exciting, somewhat rock scrambley ascent is great for all experience levels, so if you’ve never been outside before that’s okay! It is worth noting, though, that the rock scramble requires some ~agility~ so keep that in mind when choosing this trip and your footwear.

You can get nearly 360 degree views from the top of the tooth, and I personally prefer it to McAffee Knob. Hot take, I know. For more info about the hike check out this link:

Timeline for Friday:
3:30pm: Leave Echols
5:33pm: Arrive at the trailhead and get walkin’
7:00pm: Arrive at the summit and pitch camp
7:21pm: Watch the sunset and then chill and go to bed

Timeline for Saturday:
6:30am: Wake up and eat brekkie
7:07am: Watch the sunrise over the tooth <3
8:00am (ish): head back to the cars
9:30am (ish): leave to go back to C'ville
10:15am (ish): stop for a cup of Joe to fuel the rest of the day, and arrive back in CVille no later than 12:00pm

What to bring:
-backpacking backpack(not your school backpack)
-sleeping bag and sleeping pad
-sturdy shoes to hike in
-non-cotton clothes to hike in
-clothes to stay warm in (will be chilly at night)
-rain jacket/ poncho in case of rain
-headlamp
-WATER (3-4 Liters)
-dinner, breakfast, and snacks (and something to eat with if that’s nonobvious)
-toothbrush and toothpaste
-trashbag(s) to rainproof clothes and gear

If you need any gear, most of it is available to check out at the gear room. Look out for emails containing gear room hours, these get sent out weekly. Burke or I will grab tents from the gear room as needed, if you would like to hammock camp, you’re responsible for bringing your own or checking one out from the gear room. Don’t forget to grab a rain fly for your hammock if you don’t have one!
