OVERVIEW

For this trip, we’re heading southwest. Southwest Virginia that is! I recently discovered what might be the coolest hike in all of Virginia and I have been dying to check it out. Behold, the Channels: https://virginiatrailguide.com/2016/10/23/great-channels/

Pretty cool, right???

To justify the four hours of driving it’ll take to get there, I’m full sending and making this a camping trip. So without further ado, here’s the plan:

Meet up at the Shred Shack at 1:00pm on Friday, split up into cars, and roll out. We’re camping in Hungry Mother State Park (best state park name ever?) which is about 3.25 hours away so we’ll get there and set up camp and cook dinner at 4:30-5ish (we could stop for dinner on the way though so this is all subject to change). The rest of the evening will be spent exploring the park and building unbreakable bonds between us.
For the next morning, I was thinking we could wake up early and see if there’s a good spot to watch the sunrise, then immediately pack up and drive the 1.25 hours to the Channels. There’s only 6.6 miles total of hiking in the slot canyons (3.3 miles each way) so I’ll give say it’s probably only going to be 5 or so hours of exploring and climbing around and whatnot.

If we get out of there by like 2-3pm we’ll be back in Charlottesville at like 6-7pm, not including if we stop for dinner, which again I am totally willing to do.

What to bring:
-Tent or hammock (we can talk about sleeping arrangements and sharing tents once people join the trip)
-Sleeping bag and sleeping pad
-Headlamp
-Food for dinner, breakfast, and lunch (we can also talk about meals later)
-Lots o water (there will be a bathhouse at the campground but I never like to bet on unlimited supplies of water, especially if we need it to cook)
-clothes/shoes for hiking
-money for food/stops
-your love for slot canyons, long car rides, and friendship

A few notes:
-if you haven’t noticed, most of this trip is planned fairly loosely. I can easily be persuaded to leave an hour earlier/later on Friday or to aim for a specific return time on Saturday if need be. If timing is an issue for you, don’t let that stop you from at least signing up for the trip!
-If you have any recommendations for food/planning/anything, reach out to me! Number is 914-417-0824 but if you don’t text me with a joke I might not respond.
-If for whatever reason everyone who joins the trip wants to turn this into a 2-night campout, that can be arranged. But again, we’ll talk.
-Fees for the campground will be reimbursed by the club if 10 people join! There will be room for 12 people between the two campsites, I just need drivers!

Drivers needed and get priority off of waitlist!! Club reimburses gas+50% tip!!! It is a long drive but that just means more tips!!!
