Do you really want to learn how to forage but don’t know how? Me too.
Luckily, Virginia State Parks have a ton of cool outdoors programming that they offer year-round, including a free, guided foraging outing at Powhatan State Park this upcoming Friday (April 4th)! We’ll be joining a ranger (and maybe some friendly strangers who also want to learn how to forage) on a walk and discussion to search for *QUOTE* “edible delights” in forests, meadows, and even our own lawns! We’ll get to learn how to identify certain edible plants and practice foraging with respect and gratitude.
According to the website (linked here: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/event?id=2024-09-09-00-13-42-249050-e52), the walk will be up to 2.5 miles on an easy to moderate trail with some elevation gain, though I don’t have an AllTrails link to share with you all because I, too, do not know what trail we will be on yet.
The Plan:
5:00pm – Meet at the corner of Echols Dorm
5:10pm – Leave for Powhatan State Park (approx 1hr drive)
6:30-8pm – Foraging!!
8pm – Head back to Cville to hopefully get everyone home around 9pm
What you should bring:
– Comfortable footwear (sturdy sneakers or hiking boots)
– Water
– Snacks if you wish!
– Maybe a bag or jar or something to collect your foraging finds
*Note that right now the trip is for 4 people because that’s all I can fit in my car, but if there’s sufficient interest, I’ll expand the trip! Drivers, of course, get priority & are eligible for gas reimbursement!*
