Corner of Echols
also corner of echols (or wherever your heart desires)
a very specific field in highland county, VA
Have you ever seen the Milky Way? Are you skeptical of its existence? Are there aliens? Well, there’s no better way to answer those questions than to join me on Monday night to go visit the best spot for hundreds of miles in order to see it!
Highland county is the least populated county in all of Virginia. It also happens to be situated in the Allegheny Mountains, with vast swaths of grasslands amidst the gorgeous, sharp mountains and rolling hills. When you’re there, it does not feel like you’re in 2025. As such, it remains largely undisturbed by the bright lights emitting from major cities. This makes Highland County just about the best spot for stargazing on the East Coast outside of Maine or hundreds of miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The spot we’re going falls under a class 2 ranking, allowing you to easily see the Milky Way and other constellations.
What to bring:
* Warm weather clothes (we’re a lot higher in elevation so it will probably be cold, 40s)
* Water
* A small telescope could be fun
* A blanket or quilt to lay on
* Yourself
I know I am a cruel person for making this trip on a Monday night, but I have a very busy next few days and I don’t know if I’ll get the chance to make it out here again before I graduate. If you have ever wanted to see what the galaxy above looks like, this is your chance, and this is just about the best spot to do it in. Plus, it’s free, and transportation will be provided.
