OVERVIEW

Have you ever seen the Big Dipper? Orion’s Belt? The Milky Way?Most of Virginia’s skies are washed out with light pollution, so it’s hard catch more than a couple dozen stars on a clear night. But this spot in Highland County might be one of the best stargazing spot in hundreds of miles. Nestled in a mountain valley far from any large town or civilization, it’s the perfect spot to watch the night sky.

I can’t claim credit for discovering the spot though, my friend Brian Tafazoli led a trip out to this spot last semester, and the views were absolutely spectacular. We spent hours just pointing out constellations, watching satellites drift by, and soaking in the endless night sky.

Also, from experience, if you get bad carsickness, the drive back from the stargazing spot might be a bit rough (really windy + dark), so I’d suggest bringing some dramamine/motion sickness medicine.
