Sunrise Spy Rock Hike W/ Hot Summit Coffee & Potluck

OVERVIEW

Greetings,

It’s your friendly neighborhood Jeremy here again with an opportunity to bask in the glory of the natural world & get some mid-week reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the UVA bubble.

We are going to leave dark & EARLY from Echols (4:30am) in order to drive to Spy Rock and get to the summit about 30 minutes before sunrise. Why 30 minutes before? If you get there at our just before sunrise it will already be light which is no fun. To get the full majesty of the sunrise experience it’s best to get there while it’s still totally dark out and observe to entire process. During that time of enjoying the totality of the transition between dark and light, we will share food (provided by you all) and enjoy some hot coffee (provided by me).

After we enjoy sunrise (will be about 7:00am), we’ll hike back to the cars and head back to Cville in time for most classes! We will return at 9:30am at the very latest so as long as your first class is after that you don’t need to feel bad about missing classes to come on this hike!!

I’m choosing Spy Rock instead of the traditional Humpback because Spy Rock is my favorite view in Virginia (really spectacular 360 degree vista), and some other hikes besides Humpback deserve sunrise love! Not to mention we’ll probably have the summit to ourselves at sunrise on a Wednesday atop a mountain that isn’t Humpback….

WHAT YOU BRING:
– Warm layers (summit is exposed & so there might be some wind chill)
– Shoes you’re prepared to hike 3 miles in
– Water (1-2 L)
– Potluck item of your choosing
– A mug (if you want coffee)
– CAR IF YOU HAVE ONE (I don’t have a car)
– Headlamp (if you have one)
– A good attitude & flexibility

WHAT I BRING:
– Supplies to make hot coffee at the summit
– Headlamps for those who need one

Again, we will be back by 9:30am at the latest, so this trip shouldn’t interfere with classes for most of you!

DRIVERS HAVE PRIORITY and everyone will be wait listed until one signs up since I don’t have wheels. Further, drivers will have gas reimbursed and will get a 30% driver tip!
