OVERVIEW

Interested in the Lunar Eclipse but didn’t get onto Jeremiah’s trip? In need of a break from the stress of midterms? Want to enjoy hot cocoa and the company of the raddest people on grounds while observing the 2015 Supermoon? Then consider coming with me to Cold Mountain this Sunday, September 27th for the Supercool Supermoon Lunar Eclipse Hike 🌚!

Eclipse info:
Begins: Sun, Sep 27, 2015 at 8:11 PM
Maximum: Sun, Sep 27, 2015 at 10:47 PM
Ends: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 1:22 AM

We’ll meet at Echols at 1:45 pm on Sunday, September 27th and depart for Cold Mountain in George Washington National Forest (drive 1.5 hours). We’ll arrive at Cold Mountain Parking around 4 pm and hike for roughly 4 hours (5 miles) before we set up our “viewing camp” at the 360 degree panoramic high mountain meadow. We’ll watch the eclipse while eating good food, drinking “hot cocoa,” and enjoying one another’s company (and warmth), before heading back to the cars. We’ll arrive back in Cville between 1 and 3 am on Monday, September 28th, depending upon how late everyone wants to stay.

*Disclaimer: The weather forecast is not looking great as of now: 50% chance of rain, but the skies should hopefully clear by the time the eclipse is scheduled. I’ll make a decision whether or not to cancel the hike Sunday morning.

What to bring:
– Water (at least 2L)
– Lots of snacks/dinner/cup for hot cocoa (I will provide). I’m allergic to tree nuts so I would prefer if we didn’t bring any. That being said, I don’t mind stopping at Barracks before hand, so bring a little cash if you want to buy some things.
– Sturdy shoes
– Headlamp/flashlight
– Mats/blankets to get comfy while we view the eclipse (if you need to borrow any gear, please let me know when committing to the trip and I will pick it up from the gear room this Thursday)
– LOTS OF LAYERS (the low temperature will be 49, plus a possibility of rain, so I would recommend even gloves/scarves/hats, etc.)
