OVERVIEW

“The woods are calling me and I must go.” – John Muir

We will be leaving Saturday morning at 10am and driving 45 minutes to the trail head. We will hike approximately 7 miles to the Harper’s Creek AT shelter and stay the night there. We will have an early start Sunday morning (out of camp by 630am) and get back to Charlottesville before 12pm. I know 630am seems early but we’ll be going to sleep not long after the sun goes down and getting up a bit before sunrise.

“Three Ridges is one of Virginia’s most popular backpacking circuits. Situated in Central Virginia, just 30 miles southwest of Charlottesville, the hike has vista after vista along the Appalachian Trail, and many small waterfalls and pools on the Mau-Har Trail on Campbell Creek.”

We thought it would be better to have a smaller group size so there will be three trip attendees (not including trip leaders). Rachel has a car so don’t worry about a driver dropping out last minute and therefore cancelling the trip. If you are on the trip and then realize you have a conflict, please give us at least 24 hours notice.

What to bring:

Rachel and I will checkout packs, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads from the gear room. You don’t need to worry about bringing a tent because we will be sleeping in an AT shelter. Please wear appropriate clothing. Shorts, long sleeve or short sleeve synthetic shirt, wool socks if you have em, rain jacket, insulation layer (fleece or down). Your shoe choice is up to you. Don’t wear boots you just bought because you might end up with painful blisters.

Toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, a trash bag to line your pack with in case it rains, headlamp/flashlight

IMPORTANT NOTE ON FOOD:
We will not be providing stoves for group use. There’s two options for cooking. One is commonly referred to as no-cook and the other is basically any method you use to heat up your food. We will be going no-cook as we are okay with eating sandwiches for an overnighter. You do not need to worry about water purification. We will provide a Sawyer Squeeze for group use.

BRING AT LEAST 2 LITERS OF WATER
