116 Washington Avenue - A.K.A. Shred Shack
Three Ridges
Real pros would bike to the trailhead, hike the loop, and then bike home. But we’re a bunch of scrubs so we’re going to drive to Three Ridges.
Three Ridges is a rugged 13.4 mile loop which is usually backpacked over two or three days. Instead, we’ll cover the entire loop and its nearly 4,000′ of vertical gain in a single day. Some people might call this “trail running” but my doctor says I’m not allowed to do that, so we’re calling it hiking.
Either way, that makes for a pretty strenuous, challenging day. We’ll have to hit a decent pace and minimize stops to get it done by dark. This is a sick loop and it’s even radder when done in a day, but consider your abilities carefully.
Itinerary:
8:00 Rally at the Shred Shack (116 Washington Ave)
Drive 45 mins to trailhead
Hike for 6-8 hours
Return to C’Ville around 6:00, hopefully
You Bring:
-Sturdy hiking shoes
-Water – 2L should be sufficient, there is a stream ~halfway where we can filter water
-Food – More than you think you need
-Backpack
-Headlamp – never leave home without it (club can provide)
I Bring:
-First aid kit
-Water filter
-Secret weapon
***TICKS IN VIRGINIA are pretty messed up. You don’t want them. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND treating your clothes with Permethrin. It sucks to have to use chemicals to repel bugs, but it is a lot better than Lyme’s Disease!!!
