OVERVIEW

THIS HIKE HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER.

Ditch the football game and take to the woods with me! With the temperatures getting to be beautiful it’s prime time for being out in nature. We’ll hike Torry Ridge which is in the George Washington National Forest. It has the best of both worlds with stream crossings and beautiful mountain vistas.

This is about a 9 mile round trip hike — solid enough to impress your friends who were weenies and went to the football game instead, but not so brutal that it becomes unpleasant. We’ll start at White Rock Gap and do the loop counter clockwise, getting up to the ridge for a picturesque place to have lunch, and then coming down by Sherando Lake and Upper Sherando Lake. This gets the climb out of the way at the beginning, which is always better in my opinion. Then you just get to reap the benefits of beautiful views for the rest of the hike without doing too much work.

The weather is supposed to be in the mid-70s with a possible chance of afternoon thunderstorms, so prepare accordingly and keep in mind that it might be a bit cooler up on the ridge.

What you should bring: lunch/snacks, good footwear, water (at least 2 liters), a mountain-conquering attitude (aka get ready for fun times)

I currently only have space for people in my car, but if someone signs up who is willing to drive then we can expand our group. Since we’re meeting at Echols and this Saturday is a game day, I wouldn’t suggest driving to Echols unless you’re driving for the adventure. You will not be able to park your car at Echols since these spots are reserved for specific permits.

See you Saturday!
