Savage River, MD
The main event for this weekend would be The Savage River release (2 of 3 for the year) which is on Sunday 7/1 (This is Intermediate^2 skill level). You can do your own research on this run by starting here: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/748/
What you need to know about the Savage: The difficulty in the AW description appears to be a bit dated, and It’s really Class III moves, BUT has Class IV consequences: Water comes from the bottom of a lake, so It’s cold year round (50F), CONTINUOUS, and very few eddies, and shallow, and occasional river wide strainers that usually get cleaned out the day of by the rafting co, so upside down time and swim team tryouts are highly discouraged! You must bring a bombproof roll and/or brace or stellar water reading skills and boat control for everyone in the group to enjoy this run. And the object is to get in as many laps as possible – I’ve only manged 4 so far, striving for 5 this time!
My personal paddling intentions (at the minimum) is to camp out somewhere close to the Savage on sat night to aid in getting an early start, and then run multiple laps on the Savage Sunday. As for the rest of the weekend, put in the Q&A if you want to paddle something else “nearby” on Saturday or possibly even Monday (i set the trip up to cover Fri-Mon) Other “Nearby” options that will likely have water include but are not limited to:
Lower Yough, PA http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1687/
Lower New River Gorge: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2418/
Note: I am NOT “leading” on any of these rivers, I am only coordinating some food and transportation for this event, you are responsible for your own safety and the activities you choose to participate in while on this trip, and you agree to have read and will abide by the American Whitewater Safety Code http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Wiki/safety:start?
Those with the appropriate skills may join me on these runs as “Common Adventurers”
There’s commercial trips available on both the Savage and Lower Yough, you can inquire about those here: http://wilderness-voyageurs.com/whitewater.html
Everyone gets waitlisted till I screen your skills.
Probably camping at the Savage Putin Saturday night. The Club’s summer allotment won’t cover all the food and camping fees for this trip, so all should bring extra $ to cover those, we’ll probably eat out on the road somewhere Sat night. Send me a list of any camping gear needs you may have.
There’s suggested $5 donation at the putin for the entities that make the Savage releases possible, and I think launch permits on the LY run around $4. So I’ve put $30 for the fee to cover those and other extraordinary expenses.
