Whitewater Rafting at Balcony Falls!!!

Let’s Go Rafting!!!

Have you ever been whitewater rafting before? Doesn’t that sound like a pretty good way to spend a Sunday? Luckily for us, UVA is only an hour(ish) away from Balcony Falls, 3 hours of dope class 2-3 whitewater on the upper James River. This stretch is super beginner friendly but still really fun for those with whitewater experience.

About the River
The put-in is on the Maury River just outside of Glasgow. There are about 3 miles of rapids, the two of consequence being the put-in rapid, at the confluence with the Maury, and Balcony falls. This is followed by a couple miles of flatwater with 2 pretty dope swim spots. The take-out is just past the James River Footbridge where the Appalachian Trail crosses the James. All in all, it’s about 5 miles and should be a blast.

Who should sign up
You should probably know how to swim to sign up for this trip. Other than that, as long as you’re willing to paddle, you should be good to go.

Schedule:
12:00 – Meet @ corner of Echols Dorm
1:15 – Arrive at the put-in
1:45 – get going
4:45 – arrive back at the car(s)
6:00 – Back in Charlottesville
*This could run a little long*

Stuff to Bring:
At least a Liter of water (one Nalgene’s worth)
Some snacks to munch on
Non-cotton clothes- maybe some quick-dry stuff
Shoes that will stay on your feet and you don’t mind getting wet
A towel and sunscreen, if you’re into that
Any gear that you already own
A mask for the car
Maybe some raingear, if the weather looks awful
**Don’t bring anything on the water that you do not want to lose (that would suck)**

Club Provides:
All the rafting gear you desire: PFD, Paddle, and a Raft

Drivers Needed
-Drivers need to show up to Echols with a full tank of gas!
-Drivers get priority off the waitlist. The club reimburses for gas + tip!
