Maupin Field Shelter, Tyro, VA, USA
Hey y’all!
I want to go backpacking, but I also have shit (homework) to do this weekend. Solution: the world’s shortest backpacking trip. We’ll only be hiking 2 miles in/out to Maupin Field Shelter on the AT, so this not much hiking, mostly just going to sleep outside. There’s nothing spectacular about the place, but this is a good beginning trip bc the hiking is so short. AND the low is like 40-45 deg for the night so it’s not too cold, yay!
You should bring:
-HEADLAMP (we may hike in the dark bc the sun still sets early af)
-backpacking backpack & trash bag for rain liner
-sleeping bag (30 deg)
-sleeping pad
-tent (I am officially recommending to bring this even if you intend on sleeping in the shelter bc you never know when it’ll randomly be full)
-clothes (really only need one outfit for hiking and one for sleeping, but have layers so you can regulate ur body temp)
-puffy jacket and/or fleece
-hat
-RAIN JACKET (it may rain)
-2L water
-one dinner to eat in the car
-snacks
-breakfast (either something you can eat/make on trail, or something to keep in the car)
-utensil, bowl
-if you’re cooking/heating water, bring a stove, gas, and lighter
-good hiking shoes
-camp shoes (optional)
-toothbrush/paste
I’ll bring:
-first aid kit
-water filter (we should have enough water but just in case
-TP and a trowel
PLEASE don’t hesitate to lmk if you have any questions about gear or anything else: u can email me (mxz2fc@virginia.edu) or text me (757-647-6745)
