Land Acknowledgement
At UVA in Charlottesville, we acknowledge that the land where we live, learn, and work is the ancestral homelands and traditional territory of the Monacan Indian Nation, who have been here since time immemorial. We pay respect to their elders and knowledge keepers – past, present, and emerging. We also acknowledge and pay respect to the enslaved and free black laborers who built UVA, and their descendants. It is from the profits of their stolen labor, knowledge, and lives - and the dispossession of Indigenous land - upon which the University and this area have been developed. So we acknowledge the land, we acknowledge labor and knowledge, and we acknowledge lives. (Developed by Rachel Spraker, UVA EOCR in Conjunction with Monacan Elders)
