Fall 2023 Census Report!

Hello shredlings,

Thank you to everyone who filled out the census! (We know that was a little bit ago now). In total, we had 131 responses (out of around 500 club members). It was interesting and informative to see what everyone had to say. The Outdoors Club Census is incredibly useful in helping the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee understand where the club is at and how it can be improved for its members. The data provided below is a general overview of a few key census results, however, if you are interested in viewing more detailed results, consider joining the DEI Committee! (More information on how to do so at the end of this).

Demographics

Race/Ethnicity

  • American Indian or Alaskan Native – 0.8%
  • Black or African American – 0.8%
  • Asian – 9.2%
  • Hispanic or Latino/a – 5.3%
  • White/Caucasian – 92.4%
  • Middle Eastern – 0.8%

Gender Identity (Note: This question gave the option to multi-select, so results are shared in number of responses rather than percentages)

  • Female – 71
  • Male – 52
  • Gender non-conforming – 4
  • Transgender – 7
  • Genderqueer/agender – 2

We recognize that our demographics indicate a disproportionate racial makeup relative to UVA’s student population. We consider this a reflection of a broader societal issue of how historically, certain groups have not been welcome in outdoor recreation spaces AND we see plenty of work to be done within our own club. The Outdoors Club DEI Committee exists to improve the inclusivity of our club, one way being to improve the club’s diversity. This being said, the more voices we have in our committee, the greater of an impact we can have. We welcome anyone to join and attend meetings. We’d love to have you!

Thank you all again for making this club what it is! We were stoked to see all the improvement there’s been with sport accessibility, and are working to address the areas for improvement that we saw in the responses. As always, feel free to fill out our general feedback form here or reach out to the officers (outdoors-officers@virginia.edu) if you have anything else you’d like to share! If you are interested in joining the DEI Committee, you can join the GroupMe below and also fill out the W2M for a post-spring break meeting time!

Peace, love, and dirt,

Anusha & the DEI Committee
